This audio cutter trims MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC files in your browser. Load a song or recording, drag the handles on its waveform to the part you want, add a fade in or out, adjust the volume, play the selection to check it, and export it as MP3, WAV, M4A, or an M4R ringtone for iPhone. A sample tune is loaded so you can try every control before choosing your own file.

The file is decoded by the browser's Web Audio engine and cut on the raw samples, so the cut lands exactly where the handle is, and MP3 and WAV are written without any extra download. iPhone ringtones must be AAC audio in an .m4r file, which browsers cannot encode on their own, so M4A and M4R export load ffmpeg.wasm once (about 32 MB, cached). Nothing is uploaded at any point.

How to use

  1. Drop an audio file onto the box or click to choose one (or keep the sample tune to try it out).
  2. Drag the start and end handles on the waveform, or type exact times. Click Play selection to hear it.
  3. Optionally pick a ringtone preset, which sets the length, format and a short fade-out.
  4. Adjust fade in, fade out and volume; use Normalise to make a quiet clip as loud as it can be without clipping.
  5. Choose the export format and bitrate, click Export, then download the file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a ringtone for iPhone?

Choose the iPhone ringtone preset, move the selection to the part you want (40 seconds maximum; iOS rejects longer ringtones), and export as M4R. To install it, drag the .m4r onto your iPhone in Finder on a Mac (or iTunes on Windows) with the phone connected, then pick it under Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Ringtone. Without a computer, save it to Files and import it with GarageBand on the iPhone, then use Share › Ringtone.

How long can a ringtone be?

On iPhone, ringtones can be up to 40 seconds and text or alert tones up to 30 seconds. Android has no fixed limit; a ringtone loops while the phone rings, so 20–30 seconds with a short fade-out sounds best.

Does cutting an MP3 lose quality?

Exporting to MP3 re-encodes the audio, which is a small additional loss; at 192 kbps or above it is not audible for most material. Export to WAV if you will edit the clip further, and only convert to MP3 at the end.

Why won't my file open?

The cutter uses your browser's built-in decoder. MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG/Opus and FLAC work in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. WMA and AMR are not supported by browsers, and Chrome does not decode AIFF. Convert those to WAV or MP3 first, or extract audio from a video with the video to MP3 tool.

Is my audio uploaded?

No. Decoding, cutting and MP3/WAV encoding all happen in your browser. M4A and M4R export load the ffmpeg engine from the jsDelivr CDN the first time, but your audio stays on your device.

Fades, volume and normalising

A cut in the middle of a sound makes an audible click, because the waveform jumps from a non-zero value to silence. Even a 0.1–0.3 s fade removes it. For ringtones and notification sounds a fade-out of 1–2 seconds also makes the loop back to the start less abrupt.

Volume is set in decibels: +6 dB is roughly double the amplitude, −6 dB half. Normalise finds the loudest sample in the selection and sets the gain so that peak lands at −1 dBFS, leaving a little headroom for MP3 encoding, which can push peaks slightly higher. Raising the volume past the point where peaks reach 0 dB clips them; the exported file is hard-limited to avoid wrap-around distortion, but the clipped peaks will sound harsh.

Which export format to pick

• MP3: plays on everything, including Android ringtones and old devices. 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps or more for music.

• M4A (AAC): better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate; plays on all current phones and computers.

• M4R: the same AAC audio with the extension iPhone expects for ringtones.

• WAV: uncompressed 16-bit PCM, about 10 MB per stereo minute. Use it for further editing or for systems that require WAV.
