This video to MP3 converter pulls the soundtrack out of an MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI file and saves it as an MP3, M4A or WAV, or as the original audio stream without any re-encoding. It is the quick way to keep the audio of a talk, a lecture, a voice memo recorded as video or a music clip you own, without uploading the file to a converter site.

For MP3 and WAV the browser's own media decoder reads the audio and a JavaScript MP3 encoder writes the file, so most videos convert in a few seconds with no extra download. M4A, the lossless Original option and formats the browser cannot decode use ffmpeg.wasm, which is downloaded once (about 32 MB) and cached. If the video's audio is already AAC (true of almost every MP4 from a phone or YouTube-style source), M4A and Original simply copy it out: instant, and identical in quality to the source.

How to use

  1. Drop a video onto the box or click to choose one.
  2. Choose the output: MP3 for compatibility, M4A for smaller files at the same quality, WAV for editing, or Original for an exact copy of the audio track.
  3. For MP3 or M4A pick a bitrate: 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps or more for music.
  4. Optionally tick Only extract part of the video and enter start and end times.
  5. Click Convert, listen to the result, and download it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to MP3 without losing quality?

Strictly, you cannot: the audio in an MP4 is almost always AAC, and converting AAC to MP3 decodes one lossy format and encodes another. At 192 kbps or more the difference is inaudible to most people. If you want no loss at all, choose Original: the AAC track is copied into an .m4a file bit for bit, which every phone and music player can play.

What bitrate should I choose for MP3?

128 kbps is plenty for speech, podcasts and lectures. 192 kbps is a safe choice for music. 256–320 kbps only makes sense if the source audio is high quality; it cannot add detail that the video's audio track never had (most phone videos carry 96–256 kbps AAC).

Is MP3 or M4A better?

M4A (AAC) sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, especially at 128 kbps and below, and plays on all current phones, Macs, PCs and browsers. MP3 is the one format that also plays on older car stereos, cheap MP3 players and some hardware. Choose MP3 when in doubt about the device, M4A otherwise.

Is the video uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted inside your browser. MP3 and WAV usually need no network at all after the page loads; M4A and Original load the ffmpeg engine from the jsDelivr CDN once. Your video never leaves your device.

Can I extract audio from a YouTube or TikTok link?

No, this tool works on video files you already have on your device; it does not download from websites. Downloading from those services is against their terms unless they offer a download button for that video.

Which audio is inside common video files

Knowing the codec tells you whether Original can copy it losslessly:

• MP4 / MOV from phones and cameras: AAC (copied to .m4a). Some iPhone videos also carry ALAC or multichannel AAC.

• WebM from browsers, screen recorders and MediaRecorder: Opus (copied to .opus) or, in older files, Vorbis (.ogg).

• MKV: anything, often AAC, AC-3, FLAC or Opus.

• AVI and old camcorder files: often MP3 or PCM (copied to .mp3 or .wav).

If the codec has no sensible standalone format, Original falls back to AAC in M4A and says so.

File size by format

Per minute of stereo audio: MP3 at 128 kbps ≈ 0.96 MB, at 192 kbps ≈ 1.44 MB, at 320 kbps ≈ 2.4 MB; M4A at 128 kbps ≈ 0.96 MB with better quality than MP3 at the same size; WAV (16-bit, 44.1 kHz) ≈ 10.1 MB. Original matches the audio inside the video, typically 1–2 MB per minute.
