This video trimmer cuts the beginning and end off a video in your browser. Load an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file, drag the start and end handles while the player shows the exact frame at each one, and save the part you want. It can also mute the clip and reframe it to vertical 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, square 1:1, or 4:5 for the Instagram feed, either by cropping, with black bars, or over a blurred copy of itself.
There are two ways to cut, and the difference matters. Fast mode copies the video and audio streams without decoding them: it takes seconds even for an hour-long file and loses no quality, but the cut can only start on a keyframe, so it may begin a second or two earlier than you chose. Exact mode re-encodes to H.264 and starts on precisely the frame you picked, at the cost of encoding time. Everything happens on your device with ffmpeg.wasm (a one-time 32 MB download, then cached); nothing is uploaded.
How to use
- Drop a video onto the box or click to choose one.
- Drag the start and end handles, or type times such as 0:12.5. The player jumps to each handle so you can pick the exact frame; use Play selection to check.
- Choose Fast for a quick lossless cut, or Exact frame if the start must be precise.
- Optionally tick Remove the audio, or pick a new frame shape (9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9) and how to fit it.
- Click Trim, check the result in the player, and download it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my trimmed video start a bit earlier than I set?
You used Fast mode, which copies the compressed video instead of re-encoding it. Compressed video is stored as keyframes (complete pictures) followed by frames that only describe changes, and a copied clip has to start on a keyframe. Phones and cameras usually put one every 1–2 seconds, so the cut snaps back to the keyframe before your start point. Use Exact frame mode for a precise start.
Does trimming reduce video quality?
Not in Fast mode: the original compressed data is copied bit for bit. Exact mode re-encodes with x264 at CRF 20, a high quality setting, so the loss is very small but not zero, and the file size may differ from the original.
How do I make a horizontal video vertical for TikTok or Reels?
Set Frame to 9:16 and choose a fit. Crop to fill keeps the centre of the picture at full height and cuts the sides, which works when the subject is centred. Blurred background keeps the whole frame and fills the space above and below with a blurred, enlarged copy, the look common on Reels. Black bars keeps the whole frame with plain letterboxing.
Can I remove the sound from a video?
Yes. Tick Remove the audio. With Fast mode this is instant and the picture is untouched; it simply leaves out the audio track.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read from your disk by the browser and processed by ffmpeg running in WebAssembly on your device. Only the ffmpeg engine is downloaded, once, from the jsDelivr CDN.
Fast cut vs exact cut
• Fast (stream copy): seconds for any length, zero quality loss, keeps the original format (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV). Start snaps to the previous keyframe; end is accurate to within a frame or so. Best for removing dead air at the start and end of a long recording.
• Exact (re-encode): frame-accurate start and end, H.264 MP4 output that plays everywhere. Takes roughly real time or longer for HD video in the browser. Needed for reframing, and for cuts that must land on a specific moment.
Aspect ratios for social video
• 9:16 (1080 × 1920): TikTok, Instagram Reels and Stories, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat.
• 4:5 (1080 × 1350): the tallest shape the Instagram and Facebook feeds show without cropping.
• 1:1 (1080 × 1080): square posts, LinkedIn and X feeds, ads.
• 16:9 (1920 × 1080): YouTube, presentations, anything watched landscape.
When cropping, the tool keeps the largest centred area of the right shape at the source resolution. When fitting with bars or blur, the canvas is sized from the source's long side (capped at 1920 px) so it is not needlessly upscaled.
