Record your microphone in the browser with a live level meter, pause and resume, and download each take as MP3, WAV or WebM.

Found a problem, or something that could be better? We read every message and we fix things quickly.

This online voice recorder records from your computer's or phone's microphone straight in the browser, with nothing to install and no account. Press record, watch the level meter to check you are not too quiet or clipping, pause and resume as needed, and stop. Each take appears in a list where you can play it back and download it as MP3, WAV or the browser's native format.

The recording never leaves your device. The browser's MediaRecorder captures the audio (Opus in WebM or Ogg in Chrome, Edge and Firefox; AAC in MP4 in Safari), and MP3 or WAV versions are made locally by decoding the take and re-encoding it. Takes live only in the open tab: close it and they are gone, so download the ones you want to keep. For music or a good studio microphone, turn off voice processing, which otherwise applies echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain meant for calls.

How to use

  1. Pick a microphone (or leave System default) and decide whether to keep voice processing on.
  2. Click Start recording and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
  3. Speak, watching the level meter: aim for peaks in the yellow, not red. Use Pause and Resume to skip parts.
  4. Click Stop. The take appears below with a player.
  5. Download it as the recorded format, MP3 or WAV. Record more takes if you like; delete the ones you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

Is this voice recorder private?

Yes. Recording, playback and MP3 conversion all happen in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server, and takes are not saved anywhere when you close the tab. The page only asks for microphone permission for this site, and the browser shows a recording indicator while the mic is on.

What format does it record in?

Whatever your browser's MediaRecorder produces: Opus audio in a WebM file in Chrome and Edge (Firefox may use Ogg), and AAC in an MP4 (.m4a) file in Safari. Opus and AAC are both efficient, high-quality codecs. Download as MP3 for the widest compatibility or WAV for editing software.

Why does my recording sound muffled or quiet?

Usually voice processing: noise suppression and automatic gain are tuned for video calls and can dull music or a quiet voice. Untick Voice processing before recording. Also check the level meter: peaks far below the middle mean the mic gain is low (raise it in your system sound settings) or you are too far away.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in current Safari on iOS/iPadOS and Chrome on Android. Phones only show one or two microphone options. On iPhone the recording is AAC in MP4, which plays everywhere; MP3 conversion works the same way.

How long can I record?

There is no set limit. The recording is held in memory, at about 1 MB per minute for the native format, so an hour is fine on any modern device. MP3 conversion of very long takes needs more memory, since the audio is decoded first; for multi-hour recordings, download the native format.

Getting a clean recording

• Distance: 10–20 cm from the mic for speech. Closer adds bass and plosives (p, b sounds); further adds room echo.

• Level: peaks around −12 to −6 dBFS leave headroom. If the meter turns red you are clipping, which cannot be fixed afterwards.

• Room: soft furnishings absorb echo. A wardrobe full of clothes is a famously good vocal booth.

• Built-in laptop mics pick up keyboard and fan noise; any USB or headset mic is a large step up.

• Voice processing: keep it on for calls-style speech in a noisy room, turn it off for music, singing, or a decent mic in a quiet room.

Native, MP3 or WAV

The native download is exactly what was recorded and the smallest file (Opus or AAC at about 128 kbps). MP3 at 128 kbps is a similar size and plays on every device and in every app, including older ones that do not know Opus. WAV is uncompressed (about 5 MB per minute for mono 48 kHz) and is what audio editors, transcription services and some upload forms prefer.
