Sample 3MF Files — Download 3D Manufacturing Format for Testing
3MF — 3D Manufacturing Format · .3mf · MIME type model/3mf
Download a sample 3MF file to test a slicer or print-service integration. One file holds a single print-ready L-bracket (40 × 20 × 24 mm, 614 triangles) with a PNG package thumbnail; the other holds three separate objects — a cube, a sphere and a cylinder — each with its own display colour defined in a basematerials group.
3MF is the format the 3D Printing Consortium created to replace STL. It is a ZIP (an OPC package) containing [Content_Types].xml, _rels/.rels and an XML model at 3D/3dmodel.model, and unlike STL it records units, colours, multiple objects and build-plate placement explicitly. Both files are in millimetres, Z up, watertight and 2-manifold.

What people test with sample 3MF files
- Slicer and print-farm upload handling
- Reading package thumbnails for previews
- Multi-object and multi-colour imports
- Unit handling (no more “is it mm or inches?”)
- ZIP + XML parsing robustness
- STL-to-3MF conversion checks
Frequently asked questions
Is 3MF better than STL?
For printing, yes. It is smaller (compressed), declares its units, supports colours, materials and multiple objects, and stores where each part sits on the build plate. STL is still more widely accepted by older tools, so most services take both.
How do I open a 3MF file?
PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Cura and other slicers import it directly, and three.js has a 3MFLoader. Because it is a ZIP, you can also rename a copy to .zip and read the XML yourself.
What units and up axis do these files use?
glTF, GLB, OBJ, PLY, OFF, DAE and USDZ are Y-up in metres (the torus knot is about 1.4 m across). STL and 3MF are Z-up in millimetres and rest on z = 0, as slicers expect. FBX is Y-up in centimetres. The units and up axis of each file are listed in its details, so you can check that your importer scales and rotates correctly.
Where do these models come from?
We generate them. A script builds the geometry from formulas (a torus knot, UV spheres, cubes, and a bracket made with a boolean modelling library), then writes each file format byte by byte from its specification. Nothing is downloaded, scanned or converted from someone else's model, which is why they are free for any use, including commercial, with no attribution.
Are these 3MF files safe to download?
Yes. Every file is generated by our own open script from scratch — nothing is scraped or user-uploaded — and contains no scripts, macros or executables. The SHA-256 of each file is published on this page so you can verify what you received.
Can I use the sample 3MF files commercially?
Yes. They are free for any purpose, including commercial products, test suites, demos and redistribution, with no attribution required. There is nothing to license and no one to ask.
Can I hotlink these files or use them in CI?
Yes. Every link is a stable direct URL over HTTPS with Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * and long cache headers, so curl, wget, fetch() and test runners can pull them directly. A JSON index of every file is linked from each page (see the command-line section).
