This free tool lets you fill and sign PDF documents in your browser: open the file, click where you need text, a check mark or the date, add your signature, and download the finished PDF. It is built for the everyday paperwork that arrives as a PDF (a lease, a permission slip, an onboarding form, an invoice that needs a signature) when printing, signing and scanning it back is the only other option.
The document never leaves your device. Pages are rendered with pdf.js, the open-source engine Firefox uses, and the finished file is written with pdf-lib, both running locally, so there is no upload, account or watermark. To be clear about what it produces: a drawn or typed signature placed on a PDF is a simple electronic signature, which is accepted for many everyday agreements, but it is not a certificate-based digital signature and does not lock the document against later changes. When a contract demands a verified digital signature, use the signing service the other party specifies.
How to use
- Choose a PDF (or drop it on the box). It opens in the page; nothing is uploaded.
- Pick Text, ✓, ✗ or Date in the toolbar, then click on the page where the item belongs. Type into text boxes directly.
- Press Sign and create a signature: draw it with a mouse or finger, type your name in a script font, or upload a photo of your signature. Click on the page to place it.
- Drag any item to move it, use the blue handle to resize it, and the red ✕ to delete it. If the PDF has form fields, type straight into the highlighted boxes.
- Press Download PDF. The items are stamped into the pages and the file is saved as “name-signed.pdf”.
Frequently asked questions
How do I sign a PDF for free without uploading it?
Open the PDF in this tool, press Sign, draw, type or upload your signature, click where it should go and download the file. The whole process happens in your browser tab: the PDF and your signature image are never sent to a server, which you can confirm by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads; it keeps working.
Is a signature added this way legally binding?
In many countries, including the US (ESIGN Act), Canada and the EU (eIDAS), a simple electronic signature like a drawn or typed one can be valid for ordinary agreements when the parties intend to sign. Some documents (wills, certain real estate and government filings) need a wet signature, a witness or a qualified digital signature. This tool does not add a certificate, identity check or audit trail, so if the other party requires those, use the service they name. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I fill in PDF form fields?
Yes, for the common types. If the PDF has interactive text fields and checkboxes, they are highlighted in blue and you can type into them or tick them. Radio buttons, drop-down lists and signature fields are left as they are; place text or a check mark over them instead. By default the fields are flattened on download so the values cannot be changed; untick the option to keep them editable.
Can I type on a scanned PDF?
Yes. Text boxes, marks and signatures are placed on top of the page wherever you click, whether the page holds real text, a scan or a photo. A scan simply has no form fields to fill, so you add each answer as a text box. Use a font size that matches the lines on the form.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap a tool, then tap the page to place the item; drag items with your finger, and draw your signature on the pad with a finger or stylus. Pages are rendered as you scroll, so a long contract stays responsive, though a laptop is still more comfortable for dense forms.
Can I type in other languages, such as Chinese or Cyrillic?
Yes. Latin text is written into the PDF as real text. Text in scripts the built-in PDF font cannot encode (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Cyrillic and so on) is converted to a high-resolution image of the text at the same position, so it looks right but is not selectable or searchable.
Electronic signature vs digital signature
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are different things. An electronic signature is any electronic mark a person adopts to sign: a drawn signature, a typed name, a ticked “I agree” box. A digital signature is a cryptographic seal made with a certificate; PDF readers can verify who applied it and whether the file changed afterwards.
• What this tool adds: an electronic signature, as an image stamped into the page. It looks like a signed paper document and works for the many agreements that accept that.
• What it does not add: a certificate, an identity check, a timestamp or tamper detection. Anyone could edit the PDF after you send it, just as with a scanned paper signature.
• When you need more: if a bank, government portal or the other party asks for a “digital signature”, a “qualified electronic signature” or a specific e-signing platform, use what they require.
Tips for a clean, professional result
• Match the form’s size: most printed forms use 10–12 pt text. Change the size before placing text, or select a text box and drag its blue handle.
• Sign in blue if the recipient prints documents: blue ink makes it obvious which copy carries the original signature. Black is the safer default for forms that will be scanned again.
• For an uploaded signature, sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, photograph it in good light and crop it close. The background removal turns the paper transparent so the signature sits naturally on the line.
• Flatten before sending: with flattening on (the default), form values become part of the page and cannot be changed by mistake in another PDF reader.
What happens to your document
Nothing you open here is uploaded, stored or logged. The PDF is read into memory in your browser tab, the pages are drawn on canvases, and the download is generated from the original file plus the items you placed, so the original text stays sharp and selectable rather than being turned into a picture. Close the tab and it is gone. Your signatures are kept only while the page is open and are not saved between visits.
Two limits are worth knowing. Password-protected or encrypted PDFs have to be unlocked first, because they cannot be modified without the password. And PDFs that are already digitally signed will lose the validity of that earlier signature once anything is added, as with any edit to a signed file.
