Thumbnails belong to the video's creator. Downloading one for reference, commentary or your own video is usually fine; republishing it as your own artwork is not. You are responsible for how you use it.

The link you paste is parsed in your browser. The only request made is for the thumbnail images themselves, straight from YouTube's image server (i.ytimg.com); nothing is sent to us. Browse all free tools.

This YouTube thumbnail downloader takes any YouTube link, finds the video ID and shows every thumbnail YouTube has generated for it, with a download button for each. It understands all the link shapes people actually paste: regular watch URLs, youtu.be share links with ?si= tokens, Shorts, embeds, live streams, mobile m.youtube.com links, and links carrying a timestamp or a playlist.

YouTube stores thumbnails as plain JPGs at predictable addresses, so no account or API key is involved. The catch most tools hide is that the HD 1280×720 version (maxresdefault) only exists for HD uploads or videos with a custom thumbnail; for others YouTube quietly returns a 120×90 grey placeholder. This tool checks each image after it loads and tells you when a size is missing, so you do not save a grey box by mistake.

How to use

  1. Copy the video link from the address bar, the Share button or the YouTube app.
  2. Paste it into the box. The video ID is extracted instantly and the thumbnails load below.
  3. Pick the largest size that is available. Max resolution (1280×720) is best; High quality (480×360) always exists.
  4. Click Download JPG, or Copy image URL if you need a link rather than a file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?

Paste the video link here and download the "Max resolution" image, which is 1280×720. If the tool says it is not available, the video was uploaded below 720p and has no custom thumbnail, so YouTube never created an HD version. The next best is Standard definition (640×480) or High quality (480×360), which always exists.

What are the YouTube thumbnail sizes?

YouTube generates maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180) and default (120×90). The 16:9 sizes are maxresdefault and mqdefault; the 4:3 sizes add black bars above and below a widescreen video. Creators uploading a custom thumbnail should use 1280×720, at least 640 px wide, under 2 MB.

Does this work for YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Shorts links (youtube.com/shorts/ID) use the same 11-character video ID and the same thumbnail server, so the same sizes are offered. The images are landscape-shaped files even for vertical Shorts, with the frame letterboxed or cropped by YouTube.

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?

Thumbnails are copyrighted by the creator, like the video. Saving one to reference, to discuss in a review or commentary, or because it is your own video is common and usually fine. Republishing someone else’s thumbnail as your own artwork, or using it in advertising, is not. Check fair-use or fair-dealing rules where you live, and ask the creator when in doubt.

Why does the download open a new tab instead of saving?

The tool first tries to fetch the image directly so the browser saves it. Some browser settings, privacy extensions or networks block that request; in that case the image opens in a new tab and you can right-click it (or long-press on a phone) and choose "Save image as". The image is the same either way.

Where YouTube thumbnails live

Every thumbnail is served from i.ytimg.com (or the older img.youtube.com) at https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/SIZE.jpg. The video ID is the 11-character code after v= in a watch link, after youtu.be/ in a share link, or after /shorts/ in a Shorts link. Once you have the ID, you can build the address yourself; this tool just saves you the typing and checks which sizes exist.

• maxresdefault.jpg: 1280×720, only for HD uploads or custom thumbnails.

• sddefault.jpg: 640×480, 4:3 with letterboxing for widescreen video.

• hqdefault.jpg: 480×360, always generated.

• mqdefault.jpg: 320×180, 16:9 with no bars, good for small previews.

• default.jpg: 120×90, the tiny list-view image.

There are also 0.jpg to 3.jpg, which are frames YouTube picked automatically from the start, middle and end of the video. They are not the thumbnail viewers see when a custom one is set.

Making your own thumbnail

If you are here because you want to see what works for other channels, the specs for your own upload are 1280×720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 px wide, JPG, PNG or GIF under 2 MB. Custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account.

Keep faces and text away from the bottom-right corner, where the duration stamp sits, and check how the image reads at the 168×94 size YouTube uses in sidebars. Our social media image sizes tool has a YouTube thumbnail preset that crops and exports at exactly 1280×720 with that corner marked.
