An estimate, not tax advice. Rates as of 2026-10-16. Some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt (basic groceries, prescription drugs, many medical services), some provinces exempt items such as children's clothing from PST, and point-of-sale rebates apply to some items in HST provinces. Businesses: which rate to charge depends on where the supply is made (usually the customer's province), not where you are.

This sales tax calculator adds or removes Canadian sales tax for every province and territory and breaks it into its parts: 13% HST in Ontario, 5% GST plus 9.975% QST in Quebec, 5% GST plus 7% PST in British Columbia, and so on. Enter a price before tax to get the total, or a tax-included total to get back to the pre-tax amount and the tax inside it, which is what you need when filing a GST/HST return or checking a receipt.

Rates were checked on October 16, 2026 against the Canada Revenue Agency's GST/HST rate table, the source shown on the page. A comparison table shows the same amount in all 13 jurisdictions. For other countries there is a US mode using state base rates, clearly labelled as state-only because local taxes come on top almost everywhere, and a VAT mode for the UK, EU, Australia and elsewhere. This is an estimate tool, not tax advice: exempt and zero-rated items and place-of-supply rules are up to you.

How to use

  1. Pick Canada, United States or VAT at the top.
  2. Choose “Add tax” for a pre-tax price, or “Remove tax” for a total that already includes tax.
  3. Enter the amount and choose the province, state or country rate.
  4. Read the total, the tax and each component; copy the breakdown or scan the all-provinces table.

Frequently asked questions

What are the sales tax rates in each Canadian province in 2026?

HST: Ontario 13%; New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15%; Nova Scotia 14% (reduced from 15% on April 1, 2025). GST plus provincial tax: British Columbia 5% + 7% PST, Manitoba 5% + 7% RST, Saskatchewan 5% + 6% PST, Quebec 5% + 9.975% QST. GST only (5%): Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. These are the rates on the CRA's table as of October 2026.

How do I calculate tax backwards from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. A $113 receipt in Ontario: 113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13. Do not take 13% of $113 ($14.69); that overstates the tax because the 13% was charged on the smaller pre-tax amount. In Quebec, divide by 1.14975 and then split the tax into 5% GST and 9.975% QST of the pre-tax amount.

What is the difference between GST, HST, PST and QST?

GST is the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax charged everywhere in Canada. HST, the Harmonized Sales Tax, replaces GST and the provincial tax with a single combined tax in Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces, collected by the CRA. PST (BC, Saskatchewan), RST (Manitoba) and QST (Quebec) are separate provincial taxes charged alongside the GST and administered by the province (Revenu Québec for QST).

Is Quebec QST charged on top of GST?

No. Since January 1, 2013, QST is calculated on the selling price excluding GST, so the two taxes are charged side by side on the same base: 5% + 9.975% = 14.975%. Before 2013 QST was charged on the price including GST, which is why older calculators show different totals.

Which province's tax do I charge if I sell online?

Generally the rate of the province where the customer receives the goods or service, not the province you are in. A Toronto business shipping to a customer in Halifax charges Nova Scotia's 14% HST; shipping to Calgary, 5% GST. Small suppliers under $30,000 in taxable sales over four calendar quarters usually do not have to register. Provincial PST and QST registration rules for out-of-province sellers differ, so check with the CRA or the province.

Are the US rates on this page the full sales tax?

No, they are the state base rates only (Tax Foundation figures as of July 1, 2026). Most states let counties and cities add their own sales tax, so the combined rate at a checkout is often 1 to 3 points higher, and Alaska has local taxes despite having no state tax. Enter the local rate in the box provided, or look up the exact rate for an address with the state's revenue department.

Adding vs removing tax, and rounding

Adding tax is multiplication: price × (1 + rate). Removing it is division: total ÷ (1 + rate). Subtracting the rate from a tax-included total is the most common error on expense claims, and it always overstates the tax.

Each tax line is rounded to the cent, as it is on a receipt, so on some amounts the components add up to a cent more or less than the combined rate applied in one go. In remove-tax mode the pre-tax amount absorbs that cent, so pre-tax plus tax always equals the total you entered.

What this calculator does not decide for you

Whether an item is taxable at all. Basic groceries, prescription drugs, most medical and dental services and many financial services are zero-rated or exempt from GST/HST; provinces have their own exemptions (children's clothing and books from Ontario's provincial part of HST through a point-of-sale rebate, for example). Businesses claim back the GST/HST they pay through input tax credits, but generally not BC, Saskatchewan or Manitoba PST. For filing, rely on the CRA and your accountant; use this to check the arithmetic.
