This date calculator counts the days between two dates, the business days between them with weekends and public holidays removed, adds or subtracts days, weeks, months or business days from a date, and works out an age. The business-day count knows the statutory holidays for Canada's federal jurisdiction, every province and territory, and US federal holidays, so a 10-business-day deadline from an Ontario date skips Thanksgiving or Boxing Day the way it should.
Holidays are computed by their rules for any year rather than read from a short list: Good Friday from the date of Easter, Victoria Day as the Monday before May 25, Thanksgiving as the second Monday of October, Family Day as the third Monday of February, and holidays that fall on a weekend moved to their observed weekday. Each holiday can be ticked or unticked, because employers, courts and banks do not all close on the same days. Holiday lists were checked against provincial employment standards in October 2026.
How to use
- Choose a tab: days between dates, business days, add or subtract, or age.
- Pick the dates. Tick “Include the end date” if both the first and last day should count.
- For business days, choose the province, territory or US federal holidays, and open the holiday list to adjust it.
- Read the result and the holidays that were skipped; copy it with the button.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count the days between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one. From October 16 to December 31, 2026 is 76 days. Whether that includes both ends is a convention: “days between” usually counts the start and not the end, so add one if both days count, as in a hotel stay counted in days rather than nights or a contract that runs “from and including” both dates.
How many business days are there in 2026 in Ontario?
2026 has 261 weekdays. Ontario's nine public holidays all fall on, or are observed on, a weekday in 2026 (Boxing Day is a Saturday, observed Monday December 28), leaving 252 business days. Adding the Civic Holiday in August, which most employers give but the ESA does not require, makes 251.
What are the statutory holidays in Ontario?
Nine under the Employment Standards Act: New Year's Day, Family Day (third Monday in February), Good Friday, Victoria Day (Monday before May 25), Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving (second Monday in October), Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The Civic Holiday in August, Easter Monday and Remembrance Day are not public holidays under the ESA, though many employers give the Civic Holiday.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
In Canada the day off usually moves to the next working day: Canada Day on a Saturday is observed on Monday, and when Christmas and Boxing Day fall on a weekend they become Monday and Tuesday. In Ontario the legal rule is a substitute day off or holiday pay, chosen with the employee, so the observed Monday is common practice rather than a requirement. US federal holidays on a Saturday are observed the Friday before and on a Sunday the Monday after. The calculator applies these shifts unless you untick the option.
How do I add business days to a date?
Count forward one weekday at a time, skipping weekends and holidays, without counting the start date. Ten business days after Thursday, December 17, 2026 in Ontario skips December 25 and the observed Boxing Day on December 28, as well as the weekends, landing on Tuesday, January 5, 2027 (January 1 is skipped too). The Add tab does this and lists every holiday it skipped.
How is age calculated in years, months and days?
Count the full years since the birth date, then the full months since the last birthday, then the remaining days. Someone born on May 15, 1990 is 36 years, 5 months and 1 day old on October 16, 2026. People born on February 29 are counted as having their birthday on February 28 in common years here; some organizations use March 1 instead.
Statutory holidays by province and territory
Every jurisdiction has New Year's Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day. The rest vary:
• Canada (federal, Canada Labour Code): also Victoria Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sept 30), Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and Boxing Day.
• Ontario: Family Day, Victoria Day, Thanksgiving, Boxing Day.
• British Columbia: Family Day, Victoria Day, BC Day, Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day.
• Alberta: Family Day, Victoria Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day.
• Saskatchewan: Family Day, Victoria Day, Saskatchewan Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day.
• Manitoba: Louis Riel Day, Victoria Day, Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving.
• Quebec: Good Friday or Easter Monday, National Patriots' Day, Fête nationale (June 24), Thanksgiving.
• New Brunswick: Family Day, New Brunswick Day, Remembrance Day.
• Nova Scotia: Heritage Day. Prince Edward Island: Islander Day, Truth and Reconciliation, Remembrance Day. Newfoundland and Labrador: Remembrance Day.
• Territories: Victoria Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day and Truth and Reconciliation in all three, plus National Indigenous Peoples Day and Civic Holiday (NWT), Nunavut Day and Civic Holiday (Nunavut), National Indigenous Peoples Day and Discovery Day (Yukon).
Optional or widely given days that are not statutory (Ontario's Civic Holiday, Easter Monday, Boxing Day in several provinces) are listed but unticked by default.
How the holiday dates are worked out
Fixed-date holidays are simple. The moving ones follow rules: Good Friday is two days before Easter Sunday, which is computed with the standard Gregorian algorithm; Family Day, Louis Riel Day, Islander Day and Heritage Day (NS) are the third Monday of February; Victoria Day and Quebec's National Patriots' Day are the last Monday before May 25; the August civic holidays are the first Monday of August, except Yukon's Discovery Day on the third; Labour Day is the first Monday of September; Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October. Recently added holidays only apply from their first year, for example Truth and Reconciliation from 2021 federally and 2023 in BC.
All counting is done on calendar dates, not clock times, so daylight saving changes never add or lose a day.
