ChatGPT to Word — Paste AI Markdown, Get Clean Formatting
Paste an answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and copy it into Word, Google Docs or email with real headings, tables and lists instead of ** and #.
Found a problem, or something that could be better? We read every message and we fix things quickly.
This ChatGPT to Word converter fixes the formatting problem every AI user hits: you paste an answer into Word, Google Docs or an email and get asterisks, pound signs and pipe characters instead of bold text, headings and tables. Assistants write Markdown; office apps do not read it. Paste the answer here and you get a clean preview, a Copy as rich text button that pastes with real formatting, and a .docx download built with proper Word headings, lists and tables.
It also removes the leftovers that make AI text look copied: ChatGPT's 【4†source】 citation markers, Gemini's [cite] tags, numbered footnote markers, tracking parameters on links, stray ** from a partial selection and LaTeX math that would otherwise appear as \frac{a}{b}. Math becomes readable text rather than an equation object, so complex formulas are better rebuilt with Word's equation editor.
How to use
- In ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, click the copy icon under the answer (it copies Markdown) and paste it into the box.
- Check the preview on the right. Turn off any cleanup option you do not want, such as removing divider lines.
- Click Copy as rich text, then paste into Word, Google Docs, Gmail or Outlook.
- Or click Download .docx to get a Word file, or use the plain text option for places that strip formatting.
Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT text paste into Word with ** and ##?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini format answers in Markdown, where **text** means bold and ## means a heading. The chat window renders it, but the copy button puts the raw Markdown on your clipboard, and Word and Google Docs show it as literal characters. Converting the Markdown to HTML or .docx, as this tool does, turns those symbols into real formatting.
How do I paste ChatGPT tables into Google Docs?
Paste the answer here, then use Copy as rich text and paste into Google Docs. The table arrives as a native Docs table with a bold header row and borders, because the clipboard carries HTML with the table structure. Pasting the raw Markdown directly gives you rows of pipe characters instead.
What are the 【4†source】 marks in ChatGPT text and how do I remove them?
They are citation placeholders ChatGPT inserts when it quotes an uploaded file or a browsed page. In the chat they become clickable source chips, but copied text keeps the raw marker. This tool removes them, along with Gemini's [cite_start] and [cite: 1] tags and numeric footnotes such as [1][2] that follow punctuation.
Does the .docx keep headings, lists and tables?
Yes. Markdown headings become Word's Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, so they appear in the navigation pane and a table of contents. Bulleted and numbered lists (including nested ones) use Word's list formatting, tables become real Word tables, code blocks use a monospace font on a grey background, and links stay clickable.
Can it convert ChatGPT math equations?
It converts LaTeX into readable plain text: fractions become a/b, powers and indices become superscript and subscript characters where Unicode has them, and Greek letters and symbols such as ≤, × and √ are written out. That covers most formulas in everyday answers. Large matrices or multi-line derivations are better rebuilt with Word's or Docs' equation editor.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The Markdown is parsed, cleaned and turned into HTML or a .docx file in your browser, and the Word file is generated locally with the open-source docx library. Nothing is uploaded, which also means it works offline once the page has loaded.
Where to paste: Word vs Google Docs vs email
• Microsoft Word (desktop and web): Copy as rich text keeps headings, lists and tables. Word maps bold headings to its own styles only in the .docx download, so use Download .docx if you need a navigation pane or a table of contents.
• Google Docs: Copy as rich text produces real Docs headings, lists and tables. To get a .docx into Docs instead, upload it to Drive and open it with Docs.
• Gmail and Outlook: rich text keeps bold, lists, links and simple tables. Email clients drop custom fonts and some spacing, which is expected.
• Plain-text fields (CMS excerpts, forms, Slack): use Copy plain text, which keeps bullets as • and numbers lists without Markdown symbols.
What the cleanup changes
• Citations: 【n†source】 and private-use citation characters from ChatGPT, [cite_start] and [cite: n] from Gemini, and runs of [1][2] after punctuation. Square brackets inside text and code are left alone.
• Links: utm_source=chatgpt.com is removed from URLs so shared links do not carry ChatGPT tracking.
• Math: \( … \), \[ … \], $$ … $$ and $x$ are converted to readable text. Dollar amounts like $40 are recognised and kept.
• Asterisks: an unmatched ** on a line (common when you copy part of an answer) is removed, and ** spaced ** becomes bold.
• Dividers: the --- lines assistants put between sections are removed; turn the option off to keep them as horizontal rules.
Code blocks and inline code are never modified.
